Lean Body Mass Calculator: Clinical Estimation Formulas

Lean Body Mass (LBM) represents the total weight of your bones, organs, muscles, water, and non-fat tissue. Subtracting fat mass from total body weight yields your total lean mass, an essential metric for calculating precise athletic nutrition targets and clinical medication dosages.

Clinical Formulas for Estimating Lean Body Mass

Our calculator applies three validated biomedical estimation models:

Boer Formula (Most Commonly Used):
• Male: LBM = (0.407 × Weight) + (0.267 × Height) - 19.2
• Female: LBM = (0.252 × Weight) + (0.473 × Height) - 48.3

Hume Formula:
• Male: LBM = (0.32810 × Weight) + (0.33929 × Height) - 29.5336
• Female: LBM = (0.29569 × Weight) + (0.41813 × Height) - 43.2933

Step-by-Step Calculation Example

Consider a male weighing 70 kg with a height of 175 cm using the Boer formula:

  1. Weight Component: 0.407 × 70 = 28.49
  2. Height Component: 0.267 × 175 = 46.725
  3. Combined Total: 28.49 + 46.725 - 19.2 = 56.0 kg Lean Body Mass
  4. Fat Mass Calculation: 70 kg - 56.0 kg = 14.0 kg Fat Mass

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is the difference between Lean Body Mass and Muscle Mass?

Muscle mass refers specifically to skeletal and smooth muscle tissue. Lean Body Mass encompasses muscle tissue plus bones, internal organs, skin, blood, and body fluids.

Why is Lean Body Mass important for weight loss?

Maintaining high lean body mass keeps your Resting Metabolic Rate (BMR) elevated, allowing you to burn more calories continuously even at rest.
